DE: Delaware’s defense against floodwaters is failing

In the city of New Castle, four dikes protect miles of roadway, more than 80 structures and help prevent flooding upstream in the county during long storms. Closer to Delaware City, the crumbling Red Lion Creek Dike protects not only the coastal byway but two former industrial sites contaminated with hazardous waste — Metachem and Oxychem — from tidal flooding. Engineers deemed the dike as “very likely to fail” in the near future due to erosion, seepage and settlement.
